Introduction

Vehicle fires present unique challenges due to fuel systems, electrical components, and complex vehicle construction. This course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to investigate vehicle fires, determine origin and cause, and preserve evidence effectively. The program follows recognized practices from NFPA 921 and IAAI.

  • Heat and smoke movement in confined vehicle spaces
  • Indicators of origin and cause
  • Accidental v/s incendiary fire indicators
  • Impact of ventilation and materials

Day 3: Evidence Collection & Scene Examination

  • Scene safety and securing vehicle fire scenes
  • Systematic vehicle examination (interior, engine, undercarriage)
  • Identifying electrical and fuel-related evidence
  • Accelerant detection and sampling
  • Evidence collection, packaging, and preservation
  • Chain of custody procedures

Day 4: Cause Determination & Documentation

  • Determining fire origin and cause
  • Electrical vs fuel-related fire analysis

  • Scene documentation (notes, sketches, photographs)
  • Interviewing witnesses and gathering information
